P &C Conversation Journal 1/29

The Conversation Journal #2

Goal: Write a goal that is clear and something your REALLY want to practice.
Examples are:
  • talking about Seattle's soccer team to a friend who likes sports
  • ordering something new in a restaurant
  • pronouncing words with "th" clearly

Preparation: Write down what you did to prepare for doing the conversation goal.

  • Examples are:
    practice pronouncing words
  • looking up vocabulary
  • doing role plays with friends
  • writing out your script of what you want to say

Analysis: Write about what happened. What worked/what didn't work/what would you do differently if you try this goal again.

Read Chapters 3 & 4 in Homeless Bird.

Answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper in paragraph form. Your answer should be one double spaced page long.

What are the most important events in Chapters 3 & 4 and why? How do these events impact Koly and the story? Make sure to use your own words. Do not copy from the book or from websites. This is NOT a summary. This is a very brief description of the event and then an explaination in your own words about why you think the event is important.

The second is a copy of your recording.

Open the copy I made of p261 and your copy. Play the two while you listen to one and then the other. Follow the comments I made and try and hear the differences between the two recordings.

Rerecord when you feel ready and save your recording. Compare it to my recording of 1-10.

P & C 1/23 assignment

Conversation Goal
In this class you will have to write and achieve conversation goals.

What is a conversation goal? It is a specific subject, style of speaking, pronunciation target, set of information etc. that you set for yourself prior to a conversation.

Our first conversation goal will these have parts:

  • Identify the goal.
  • Write out and then visualize your goal’s execution.
  • Try your goal out! Have your planned conversation!!
  • Write a short journal summary (10 sentence minimum) of what worked well, what didn’t work, what you will do differently next time.
  • Post your journal, send it by email or hand it in on Tuesday.

Read Chapter 2 of Homeless Bird.Think about the following questions:

  • What are the main events in the chapter?
  • What is Hari's personality like?
  • What can you say about Koly's personality from the chapter?

On a separate piece of paper choose any one part of the story and write your own story about what happens. You can choose any part of the story that has not already been described. Write at least at least 1 page double spaced. Use the time order signal words on p. 25 of your writing book to tell the story. Try and include a FANBOYS.

Read Chapter 1 of Homeless Bird.
Think about the following questions:

What event is described at the end of the first chapter?

  1. Go to: http://voanews.com/english/Science/index.cfm
  2. Choose one of the articles with a speaker symbol next to it.
  3. Put on your headphones and listen to the article as you read along.
  4. Write down any vocabulary you don't know.
  5. Guess the meaning of the vocabulary from the words around it in the article.
  6. Now use http://dictionary.reference.com/ to find the meaning of the word.
  7. Close the webpage and write a 5-10 sentence summary of the article.
  8. Try to answer who? what? when? where? why?
  9. Give your opinion of what you feel about the article in 2-3 sentences.
