5/22 Hw

Service Learners:

Think about your service learning up to this point. Think of the people you have met. Who have you met that you admired? Why do you admire them? What do they do at your service learning site?

This person could be a supervisor, a fellow service learner, a client at your site or anyone you have encountered during your service learning.

Once you have identified the person, make an mp3 about this topic and submit it to ewhraj@gmail.com.

Also, remember that you must complete your 16 service hours by June 12th in order to get a service learning notation on your transcript. Make sure that you are logging your hours each week and filling in your timesheet so that it can be submitted to me at the end of the quarter with your supervisor's signature. Have a great weekend!

Non- Service Learners-

Your homework is to find a joke you like. Practice it several times in front of the mirror or with a friend. Then you must go out and tell it to a stranger. You will hand in on Tuesday, a summary of the person's reaction to your joke. Did they laugh? Was it a success? What would you change about your pronunciation, timing, delivery the next time you try and tell this joke. I will spot check the class by asking a few of you to tell your joke to the class on Tuesday so be ready!!!

Everyone- have a great long weekend!

Weekend HW

Service Learners-

You are to think about your experience so far at your SL site. What have you noticed about the work? How does it make you feel? Is there something about your SL that is particularly good or particulary bad? What do you wish you could do that you have not gotten to do yet? What about SL do you wish you did not have to do? Write a journal entry on a piece of large notebook paper or on the computer and answer these questions. Hand in your jurnal entry on Monday. Choose a best and worst moment in your SL experience so far and make an Mp3 recording of those experiences. Send your file to ewhraj@gmail.com

Non-Service Learners

Start thinking about the ad you will present on Friday next week.

You want to decise what product you will be selling.

Decide how you will sell the product- what will be your emotional appeal?
Who is your audience?

On Monday you will hand in a piece of paper which has the following info on it:
Group members names
product you are going to sell
type of appeal you will use (guilt, humor, fear)
a general description of the characters in your ad and the situation

Example:
Joh and Cindy are in my group
We are selling deoderant
We will use guilt
Situation will be two people on the bus. One person will faint, the other will tell the stinky guy he needs deoderant. They will sing a song about taking a shower and smelling like a field of daisies when they use this product. The ad will end with a warning.

Weekend Homework 5/8

Service Learners Homework

Read the Mission Statement for your agency. You can find this on their website. Think of 3 questions you have that relate to that mission statement. Then choose one of the questions and make an mp3 recording of your answer to your own question. (You are just guessing the answer. I do not expect you to know it!) Try and make one of your questions general and one specific. Your 3rd question can be anything that wonder about your SL organization. Turn you questions and answers in on Monday and then next week ask two of your questions about the mission statement when you are at SL and write the answers in your SL journal.

Example:
Habitat for Humanity Mission: Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends.

Questions from the mission statement:
I don't believe in God. Can I volunteer for Habitat for Humanity?
Do all Habitat for Humanity volunteers help build houses?
Has Habitat for Humanity every built houses in my country?

Guessed answer to question 1. (I can't post Mp3 files here so I am writing it)
I think you can volunteer even if you don't believe in God. I think that H for H just needs help and anyone who wants can help. I think H for H staff probably think I am volunteering because of my belief in God, but actually I just want to help someone get a better house to live in. I especially want to help the family I met because they have 2 kids and they have been homeless for a long time. They are really good people and I'm glad that H for H is helping them. I don't think anyone should be homeless if they don't want to be and they have children.

Homework for All other Pronunciation and Conversation students.

Find an advertisement in an magazine, newspaper, on the web or somewhere else. Make sure it is an ad that you really like. Think of 5 reasons for why you like the ad. Make sure you have a picture of the ad. Make an Mp3 recording that describes your ad.
Answer these questions:
What is the ad selling?
What does the ad look like?
What are the 5 reasons that you like it?
Now take your advertisement around to 5 people and ask their opinion of the ad. Fill out the opinion survey paper and bring it to class on Monday. Make sure to post you Mp3 file by Monday as well.
