Weekend Homework 5/8

Service Learners Homework

Read the Mission Statement for your agency. You can find this on their website. Think of 3 questions you have that relate to that mission statement. Then choose one of the questions and make an mp3 recording of your answer to your own question. (You are just guessing the answer. I do not expect you to know it!) Try and make one of your questions general and one specific. Your 3rd question can be anything that wonder about your SL organization. Turn you questions and answers in on Monday and then next week ask two of your questions about the mission statement when you are at SL and write the answers in your SL journal.

Example:
Habitat for Humanity Mission: Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends.

Questions from the mission statement:
I don't believe in God. Can I volunteer for Habitat for Humanity?
Do all Habitat for Humanity volunteers help build houses?
Has Habitat for Humanity every built houses in my country?

Guessed answer to question 1. (I can't post Mp3 files here so I am writing it)
I think you can volunteer even if you don't believe in God. I think that H for H just needs help and anyone who wants can help. I think H for H staff probably think I am volunteering because of my belief in God, but actually I just want to help someone get a better house to live in. I especially want to help the family I met because they have 2 kids and they have been homeless for a long time. They are really good people and I'm glad that H for H is helping them. I don't think anyone should be homeless if they don't want to be and they have children.

Homework for All other Pronunciation and Conversation students.

Find an advertisement in an magazine, newspaper, on the web or somewhere else. Make sure it is an ad that you really like. Think of 5 reasons for why you like the ad. Make sure you have a picture of the ad. Make an Mp3 recording that describes your ad.
Answer these questions:
What is the ad selling?
What does the ad look like?
What are the 5 reasons that you like it?
Now take your advertisement around to 5 people and ask their opinion of the ad. Fill out the opinion survey paper and bring it to class on Monday. Make sure to post you Mp3 file by Monday as well.
