5/22 Hw
Think about your service learning up to this point. Think of the people you have met. Who have you met that you admired? Why do you admire them? What do they do at your service learning site?
This person could be a supervisor, a fellow service learner, a client at your site or anyone you have encountered during your service learning.
Once you have identified the person, make an mp3 about this topic and submit it to ewhraj@gmail.com.
Also, remember that you must complete your 16 service hours by June 12th in order to get a service learning notation on your transcript. Make sure that you are logging your hours each week and filling in your timesheet so that it can be submitted to me at the end of the quarter with your supervisor's signature. Have a great weekend!

Weekend HW
You are to think about your experience so far at your SL site. What have you noticed about the work? How does it make you feel? Is there something about your SL that is particularly good or particulary bad? What do you wish you could do that you have not gotten to do yet? What about SL do you wish you did not have to do? Write a journal entry on a piece of large notebook paper or on the computer and answer these questions. Hand in your jurnal entry on Monday. Choose a best and worst moment in your SL experience so far and make an Mp3 recording of those experiences. Send your file to ewhraj@gmail.com
Non-Service Learners
Start thinking about the ad you will present on Friday next week.
You want to decise what product you will be selling.
Decide how you will sell the product- what will be your emotional appeal?
Who is your audience?
On Monday you will hand in a piece of paper which has the following info on it:
Group members names
product you are going to sell
type of appeal you will use (guilt, humor, fear)
a general description of the characters in your ad and the situation
Example:
Joh and Cindy are in my group
We are selling deoderant
We will use guilt
Situation will be two people on the bus. One person will faint, the other will tell the stinky guy he needs deoderant. They will sing a song about taking a shower and smelling like a field of daisies when they use this product. The ad will end with a warning.

Weekend Homework 5/8
Read the Mission Statement for your agency. You can find this on their website. Think of 3 questions you have that relate to that mission statement. Then choose one of the questions and make an mp3 recording of your answer to your own question. (You are just guessing the answer. I do not expect you to know it!) Try and make one of your questions general and one specific. Your 3rd question can be anything that wonder about your SL organization. Turn you questions and answers in on Monday and then next week ask two of your questions about the mission statement when you are at SL and write the answers in your SL journal.
Example:
Habitat for Humanity Mission: Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends.
Questions from the mission statement:
I don't believe in God. Can I volunteer for Habitat for Humanity?
Do all Habitat for Humanity volunteers help build houses?
Has Habitat for Humanity every built houses in my country?
Guessed answer to question 1. (I can't post Mp3 files here so I am writing it)
I think you can volunteer even if you don't believe in God. I think that H for H just needs help and anyone who wants can help. I think H for H staff probably think I am volunteering because of my belief in God, but actually I just want to help someone get a better house to live in. I especially want to help the family I met because they have 2 kids and they have been homeless for a long time. They are really good people and I'm glad that H for H is helping them. I don't think anyone should be homeless if they don't want to be and they have children.
Homework for All other Pronunciation and Conversation students.
Find an advertisement in an magazine, newspaper, on the web or somewhere else. Make sure it is an ad that you really like. Think of 5 reasons for why you like the ad. Make sure you have a picture of the ad. Make an Mp3 recording that describes your ad.
Answer these questions:
What is the ad selling?
What does the ad look like?
What are the 5 reasons that you like it?
Now take your advertisement around to 5 people and ask their opinion of the ad. Fill out the opinion survey paper and bring it to class on Monday. Make sure to post you Mp3 file by Monday as well.

Also if you have not yet sent me your tongue twister with your hardest sounds, DO IT!!! You can find great tongue twisters at http://www.twisterking.com/
Service Learning Students-
You need to turn in your 1st reflection piece on Monday. Send to ewhraj@gmail.com. This should be an Mp3 file. Please practice before you record!!! Answer the following question:
When you think about your own life, how has your experience in Service Learning made you change the way you look at, understand, or frame your beliefs about some aspect of living.
This is a written example, but yours will be spoken!
Example:
Before service learning I thought that people who begged on the street were lazy or low class. I met a person at the shelter who used to work at Boeing. He son had cancer and died. She spent all the mony she had to keep him alive. She is an engineer. She is not a lazy person. After her son died, she got divorced and her husband kept her money because she had a higher salary. Now she has to take care of her other kids and the economy is bad so she can't find a job. She is confused and sad about her life. She is not lazy or uneducated. She is horribly unlucky.
The shelter is giving her food, bus tickets and clothes, but she cannot stay there. I think if I were in the same situation I would be so ashamed and depressed. She is really strong. Everyday she goes to a job center and tries to get a job. She helps her kids do their homework and tries to keep a positive face. I have never met someone who has to go from living in a good condition to a bad condition like her. I feel when I talk to her how lucky I am and how easily life can change. I changed my ideas about homeless people like her.

RWG3 HW 2/11
1.Oetzi the Iceman is the modern nickname of a well-preserved natural mummy of a man from about 3300 BC. The mummy was found in 1991 in a glacier of the Otztal Alps, near the border between Austria and Italy. Oetzi was named after the valley of his discovery. He rivals the Egyptian "Ginger" as the oldest known human mummy, and he has offered a unique view of the habits of Copper Age Europeans.
2. Oetzi was found by two German tourists on September 19, 1991. The body was at first thought to be a modern corpse, like several others which had recently been found in the area. It was roughly recovered by the Austrian authorities and taken to Innsbruck, where its true age was finally discovered. It is now being displayed at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bozen-Bolzano, Italy.
3. The body has been extensively examined, measured, x-rayed, and dated. Tissues and stomach contents were examined microscopically. Scientists believe that at the time of his death, Oetzi was a 30-to-45-year old man, approximately 160 cm (5'3") tall.
4. Analysis of pollen and dust grains on his clothing, and analysis of Oetzi’s teeth enamel show that his childhood was spent near the present village of Feldthurns, north of Bolzano. He later went to live in valleys about 50 km further north.
5. The Iceman had 57 tattoos. Some were located on or near acupuncture points that are used today to treat symptoms of digestive problems and osteoarthritis. Interestingly, scientists have found that Oetzi suffered from digestive problems and osteoarthritis. Some scientists believe that these tattoos indicate an early type of acupuncture.
6. Oetzi’s clothes include a cloak, vest, and shoes. They were quite sophisticated. The cloak was woven from grass, and the vest was made of leather.
7. The shoes were waterproof and wide. They seemed to be designed for walking across the snow; they were constructed of bearskin, deer hide, and tree bark. Soft grass was wrapped around the foot and also placed in the shoe. The grass functioned like warm socks. Recently, the shoes were reproduced by experts. They are of such excellent quality, that there are plans for them to be made commercially.
8. Other items found with the Iceman include a copper axe, flint knife, and a bow and quiver of arrows.
9. Additionally, Oetzi carried two species of mushrooms. One of these mushrooms is known to have antibacterial properties, and was likely used for medical purposes.
10. Researchers believe Oetzi may have been involved in a fight. Injuries from the fight may have killed him. A DNA analysis revealed traces of blood from four other people on his gear: one from his knife, two from the same arrowhead, and a fourth from his coat.
11. A CAT scan revealed that an arrowhead was stuck in Oetzi’s shoulder when he died. The arrow shaft had been removed, but the arrowhead had been left inside his body. He also had bruises and cuts on his hands, wrists, and chest.
12. From such evidence, and an examination of his weapons, molecular biologist Thomas Loy from the University of Queensland believes that Oetzi and his companions were hunters who fought with a rival group. At some point, he may have carried (or been carried by) a companion. He may have been weakened by blood loss. As a result, Oetzi apparently put down his equipment neatly against a rock, lay down, and died.
13. His body was covered by thousands of years of ice and snow until his recent discovery. Pieces of his clothing, his hair, his skin, and his personal possessions were well-preserved because of the cold temperatures.
· Read the story above.
· Write 5 questions in the active voice that can be answered in the passive voice.
Example:
Q-How did the scientists choose Oetzi’s name?
He was named after the valley where he was discovered.
