All students-
Research your topic. Try http://www.idebate.org/debatabase/topic_index.php to find tons of info on your topic! Come to school on Monday with 7 reasons for your argument and 7 pieces of evidence. Be ready to work with your group to choose the best arguments (you will not have time to use them all in 10 minutes). Practice arguing your point quickly (use a friend or a mirror). Time yourself and choose your 2 favorite reasons and argue them two times. See if you can speak faster and still make your point clearly on the 2nd time!
Also if you have not yet sent me your tongue twister with your hardest sounds, DO IT!!! You can find great tongue twisters at http://www.twisterking.com/
Service Learning Students-
You need to turn in your 1st reflection piece on Monday. Send to ewhraj@gmail.com. This should be an Mp3 file. Please practice before you record!!! Answer the following question:
When you think about your own life, how has your experience in Service Learning made you change the way you look at, understand, or frame your beliefs about some aspect of living.
This is a written example, but yours will be spoken!
Example:
Before service learning I thought that people who begged on the street were lazy or low class. I met a person at the shelter who used to work at Boeing. He son had cancer and died. She spent all the mony she had to keep him alive. She is an engineer. She is not a lazy person. After her son died, she got divorced and her husband kept her money because she had a higher salary. Now she has to take care of her other kids and the economy is bad so she can't find a job. She is confused and sad about her life. She is not lazy or uneducated. She is horribly unlucky.
The shelter is giving her food, bus tickets and clothes, but she cannot stay there. I think if I were in the same situation I would be so ashamed and depressed. She is really strong. Everyday she goes to a job center and tries to get a job. She helps her kids do their homework and tries to keep a positive face. I have never met someone who has to go from living in a good condition to a bad condition like her. I feel when I talk to her how lucky I am and how easily life can change. I changed my ideas about homeless people like her.
